Resilience- The dynamic ability to bounce back

Recently, the world seems to be lurching from one crisis to another. We’ve experienced a global pandemic, dramatic changes to how we conduct our daily lives, economic uncertainty, and political and social turmoil, as well as an array of natural disasters.

While there’s no way to avoid adversity or distress in life, there are ways to help smoothen the rough waters and regain a sense of control. Resilience is the ability to cope with the loss, change, and trauma that have been inevitable parts of life even before these extraordinary times. Resilience will not dissolve our problems but surely give us the ability to see past them, search for joy in life and handle stressful situations in a better way.

Here are some tips that we can use to build our resilience and improve our well-being:

  • Flexibility is the key to face uncertainty that life throws at us. Be ready for the change, avoid being rigid and welcome life.
  • Connecting with friends and family when you’re going through tough times can help ease stress and boost your mood.
  • Invest in self-care by getting enough exercise, practising a ‘mind and body’ relaxation technique, improving your sleep, and sleeping well.
  • Experiences are the great teachers; we can recall the past hardships and sail through the rough times easily.
  • Humour is known as the best medicine to cope with stressful situations. Utilizing this mechanism and laughing the problems away we can increase our resilience power.
  • Building a positive and optimist attitude helps a lot.
  • Define the goals in your life and write them down. Go through them once a day, this will help to remain focused and give a sense of accomplishment.

Resilience is a multi-faceted capability. Remember, No one escapes pain, fear, and suffering. Yet from pain can come wisdom, from fear can come courage, from suffering can come strength – if we have the virtue of resilience.
